A karbonit egy szénből készített fémötvözet volt. Tibanna-gázzal vegyítették, majd összesűrítették, gyorsfagyasztás alá vetették, és tömbformájúvá alakítottak a szállíthatóságukhoz.

A Teta Császárnő-rendszer egy karbonit-lelőforrás volt. Miután felfedezték, hogy a karbonit felhasználásával le tudják fagyasztani az űrjárókat a hosszú csillagközi űrutazásokra, a gyarmatosító hajók végét jelentette. A Koros Major a Bányászcéh melegágya és egyik erődítménye lett.
A Polus bolygó is rengeteg mennyiséggel rendelkezett a fémötvözetből a fagyott pusztaságaiban. A Polus lakosai fontos szerepet játszottak a fagyasztási és bányászati folyamatokban.
Számtalanszor történt meg az eset, hogy az egyének karbonitba fagyasztották magukat. YE 33-ban, egy évvel azelőtt, hogy a Kereskedelmi Szövetség megszállta a Naboot, I-5YQ karbonitba fagyasztott magát és Lorn Pavant, hogy túléljenek egy robbanást, amit Darsha Assant indított be, mialatt Darth Maullal párbajozott. Valamikor a Klónok Háborújában Anakin Skywalker Jedi-lovag karbonitba fagyasztatta magát és csapatát a feltűnés elkerülése végett, mikor a Gworira indultak, és később ismét felhasználtak ezt egy újabb küldetésnél.
Filba karbonittal csempészte a botát, amit a Drongar bolygón termesztett a Klónok Háborújában, hogy a minőségét megőrizze. Néhány coruscanti égi állomást karbonit nanorosttal kötöttek a felszínhez.
Néhány helyen a karbonitot a holttestek megőrzéséhez használták. A Coruscanton Viento szenátort is így temették el a Szenátori Temetőben. Han Solót karbonitba fagyasztatta Darth Vader, hogy teszteljék, hogy a Bespin fagyasztási procedúráját egy ember túléli-e, mielőtt Luke Skywalker lefagyasztását tervezte volna. A fagyasztókamra módosításai sikeresek voltak abban, hogy Solo túlélte a fagyasztási folyamatot és mély álomba merült. Vader kreációja egyben műtárgyat is létrehozott. Boba Fett úgy nevezte, hogy "Karbonitba zárt ember", arra ingerelve Jabbát, hogy jelentősebb összeget fizessen Solóért. Savage Opress is egy ilyen műtárgy lett a halála előtt. Moruth Doole a kesseli börtönrendszer igazgatójának holttestét fagyasztotta karbonitba, és trófeaként kifüggesztette az irodájában. Karbontiba fagyasztott állapotban egy Erő-használó nem tudta használni az Erőt, és nem is tudott semmilyen szinten sem kapcsolatba kerülni azzal, ami hatásos csapda volt a Jedikkel szemben. A hiperhajtómű egyik alkatrésze egy karbonit betét volt.
A karbonitot még hadászati célokra is használták és karbonit ágyúkat állítottak elő, amikkel karbonittal fújták be az ellenséget, hogy megfagyasszák és megbénítsák őket. Ezek már a Régi Köztársaság idején jelen voltak, míg a Galaktikus Polgárháború elején a Galaktikus Birodalom karbonit harci droidokat alkalmazott. Legalább egyszer volt olyan, hogy egy karbonit harci droid egy egész falut karbonittal befújt. A Második Galaktikus Polgárháború idején Boba Fett és Mirta Gev felfedezték, hogy Fett felesége, Sintas Vel, nem halt meg, hanem csak karbonitba fagyasztották. Az ilyen karboniton alapuló fegyverek használata folytatódott a Polgárháború alatt.
YE 43.5-ben csak néhány évvel a Második Galaktikus Polgárháború után, Natasi Daala államfő karbonitot használt egy veszedelmes Jedi foglyul ejtéséhez, aki egy rejtélyes Erő-elmebajon esett át. A karbonitot látták az egyetlen olyan eszköznek, amivel fogva lehet tartani egy Jedit, a karbonitba foglalás viszonylag biztonságos bénító hatása miatt. Azonban volt néhány Erő-érzékeny lény, akik kitörtek a karbonit fogságukból, köztük Galen Marek és a klónja.
